2013 was certainly a big year for Black Horse Motel. We released our first full length album, Red Summer Spirit (which you should buy if you haven't yet). We played a sold-out release show at Kung Fu Necktie and plenty of other great shows. We expanded our stomping grounds and got featured in some great publications. This year also marked some lineup changes for us. Josh and Johnell decided to move on and we were sad to see them go, but wish them luck. They are both involved in other projects, so keep your eyes peeled and I'm sure you'll spot them playing around town! Galen has been bringin da noise since joining the band in the fall and we have been playing with violin/viola/fiddle players Christen Hooks and Ryann Lynch.
It seems 2014 is already promising to be a tremendous year for Black Horse Motel.
First of all, according to the Chinese zodiac, 2014 is the year of the Horse, which is great for all you horseheads out there, but will also hopefully bring good fortune to the band as well. In addition, Desiree and I were both born in horse years, so we will gain special musical abilities whilst playing banjo and cello (if our eyes are glowing you know it's working).
Also we have just been nominated for the Tri State Indie Music awards! So an extra happy new year for us. Who knows if we will win, but being nominated is still very exciting. You can check out the details here.
One more bit of excitement for the new year is our show on Jan 10 at World Cafe Live with A Fistful of Sugar. We are really happy to support these guys for their album release show, and we are really excited to be playing with the other artists - West Philadelphia Orchestra and Aaron & The Spell - downstairs at World Cafe Live. Make sure you don't miss the show, it will be a very good one!
Happy horse year everyone! - David
