Fri 11/13 HUGE show at Boot & Saddle Philly!

Friday, November 13
8:00pm - 11:00pm
Boot & Saddle - 1131 S Broad Street Philadelphia, PA 19147
Tickets $10

We are super excited to be back at Boot & Saddle this Friday. This will be our last big show before we head back into the studio this winter! To make a real foot-stomper, we've got two AMAZING acts sharing the stage!

Chelsea Sue Allen is a local Philly folk favorite who released a new album, Lonely Ages, this Monday 11/09! Get it now at Bandcamp and come hear the new tracks live on Friday!

Forlorn Strangers hail from Nashville. We have had the pleasure of playing two shows outside of Philly with these beautiful people and we are so happy we could finally get them into our hometown! You really don't want to miss these guys, they put on one heck of a live show!

Container Department: Travelite Cases

Instruments are an investment, no doubt. It's just difficult when you look at a good instrument case and discover it costs more than your instrument does in the first place. Also, fiberglass wonder cases are heavy! I've used chipboard cases and skb/gator abs cases. I like these travelite cases much better.

I use the resonator case for both my roundneck and squareneck. Des uses one for her cello. Here's the Pros and Cons as I see them, and below a video of someone else comparing them to another brand.

  • Pros:
    • Xtreme light weight
    • Good protection
    • strong closure system
    • self contained hygrometer
    • Concerns
      • hinge durability
        • The hidden metal hinge is attached with nails to they foam structure. This obviously eventually pulls out.
        • The cloth around the hinge is glued into place and under repeated pressure the glue gives way and the case begins to fall apart.
        • As of right now, though Des' cello case and my resonator case are both showing these signs, neither has lost any functionality as a result.
        • More difficult to label clearly
        • Not sharps protected

Container Department: TC Helicon Voicelive 3 Gigbag

Are you one of those fans who loves catching the acoustic show? Do you love it when your favorite bands put away all the noise and just let the songs breathe? You are not going to want to miss our intimate set at Kung Fu Necktie on October 10. Megan and Ryann will be sitting this one out so Dave, Desiree and I can bring you a small room listening experience you're not going to forget. This is a small room and we're really looking forward to being able to talk to all of you about the songs.

Alright, down to gear reviews. I've got a couple of container reviews coming out that should all be nice and short. In my regular stage setup, I use a TC Helicon Voicelive 3 as my main control/preamp for guitars and vocals. Carrying it is what we're on about today, and my container of choice is the TC Helicon Voicelive 3 Gigbag. I got mine at Sweetwater because NOBODY had one in my area.

Voicelive 3 Gig Bag
Voicelive 3 Gig Bag

Ok, so it's a great piece of kit because it's light, and it fits, and so far it's sturdy. It is still produced in classic "lost-backstage-black," which is a continual bummer to me, but overall I still like using it. But, as I add pedals to the mix (e.g. expression pedal, BeatBuddy for midi syncing a click track, etc, I'm being forced to consider a larger pedalboard solution because this bag just can't carry as much as I'd like it to.

For those of us using a Voicelive 3, there's a minimum cable load of 4 XLR cables. One comes from the microphone, two carry the microphone signal and guitar signals to the mixing board, and a fourth carries the monitor send from the board to me. Add in my instrument cable, and power cord and this bag is full. I can store the microphone in the side pocket (except I prefer a Shure Super 55). I'm glad I have it, but I wish it's front pockets were bigger/more useful. It does keep me in the land of urban guitarist, where I can carry an acoustic on one side, and electric on the other, and the pedals across my back. I like that kind of portability.

I don't like the decorative front flap. There's very thin strip of hook and loop on the flap and the bag and any amount of over-stuff prevents it from staying put. Which means things you have tucked into the pen slots, or open pocket behind the mesh pocket, just fall out.

TC Helicon GigBag

  • Price: $50
  • Pros:
    • Fits well.
    • Holds things like it's supposed to.
    • Doesn't take up much room.
    • Pen storage, because I'm a dweeb like that.
    • Sturdy
    • Concerns:
      • Really odd shoulder strap.
      • Won't actually hold any accessory items.
      • Hook and Loop doesn't inspire confidence.

A quick note from Galen:

Boy howdy, did we ever get some equipment upgrades. I don't have time to do big writeups right now, because we're headed out to The Philadelphia Folk Festival tomorrow, but we've got mixers, we've got in-ear monitors, hell, we've got a new drum kit. We might even have a van. I can't wait to tell you all about our new inventory.

We will also be joined by Equality Pennsylvania! Equality PA is building support for the Pennsylvania Fairness Act, a bill that (if passed) would finally protect LGBTQ people from discrimination in the work place! As it stands PA is one of 29 states in which you can still legally be fired based on your sexual orientation, and is one of 32 states in which you can still legally be fired based on gender identity. The Pennsylvania Fairness Act would put an end to this discrimination.

What should I put in that cup?

Slippery Elm, or Ulmus rubra for those with a monocle, is a tree that grows in North America. It's awesome for many reasons. It's a big tree, and those are always nice to see, especially living in a city. It's a shady tree, and this summer is set out to be a doozy. None of that, however, is why slippery elm makes an appearance in the tack shop today. No my friends, it is here in the tack shop because of a special quality it's bark possesses. Namely, if you add a little hot water, the bark turns completely gross. Slimy, puffy, just disgusting really.

Grand Opening of the Tack Shop

I was on a bus once, it was in the middle of the night, and I had a box of crackers and a can of Easy Cheese. It was dark, and it was a surprise how much cheese I had applied on each cracker. That's why they should have a glow-in-the-dark version of Easy Cheese. It's not like the product has any integrity to begin with. If you buy a room-temperature cheese that you squeeze out of a can, you probably won't get mad because it glows in the dark too.~Mitch Hedberg

The Practice Derby Take 1

Hi!Welcome to Black Horse Motel's newest installment of pun-tacular web posts "The Practice Derby." Before I tell you what that's all about, here at Black Horse Motel's website you will find that members of the band specialize in 'horsey-themed' posts and I would like to highlight them first before I tell you about the "Practice Derby."

Desiree makes sure you are well fed with delicious treats from "The Feedbag." In "The Feedbag" posts you will find awesome recipes.  Megan reviews what bands and artists are favorites of the band members in Black Horse Motel, and she introduces you to new music from all over the place in her "Horse Tracks" web posts.  And last but not least, Dave gets right to the point in his web posts titled "Horse Shit."  "Horse Shit" is perfectly appropriately named for our past musical fails, flops, and embarrassingly bad song writing.  As years move on, the band will have plenty to add to this web post.  In short, "Horse Shit" keeps us humble.

I'm very excited that I get to put my two cents in now!  Welcome to the "Practice Derby!"  Have you ever wondered what musicians do to practice their craft?  I have.  I thought it would be fun to share with you how I practice improvisation and a whole bunch of other things on the violin.  It's not magic, it's hard work.  I could definitely use more control and discipline in my practice and playing in general.  I usually won't practice unless I have an important gig approaching, and that's a shame.

SO! I thought I would ask YOU to suggest a song, a piece, a cover - anything - a Jimi Hendrix solo - an Outkast song - Bach's Partita's - anything, seriously.  Just put your suggestion in the comments section of the Youtube video below.  I will pick one of the suggestions and the next video post will (hopefully) give you a glimpse into what it took for me to learn the tune and maybe I'll nail it, or maybe it will be like an epic Pinterest Fail.  Either way, hopefully it will be entertaining.  Enjoy the video!

Cheers! ~Ry
