Holiday Schmoliday!

Ok, so whatever holiday, or lack there-of, suits you is coming up and you're feeling frazzled. You're running around with your hands in the air. SCREAMING. You're probably even wondering where you left your head and what exactly it looked like. To make all of that worse, you're realizing that it's kind of last minute and you haven't acquired any token of affection for your loved one. Fear not good citizen, for Black Horse Motel is here to save you. Melody, from Hey Dude

Did you know that just two days from now we're playing at Melodies Cafe in Ardmore. It used to be Milkboy, but now it's Melodies. I think you'll agree, that it sounds more musical that way, or maybe it just reminds you of Hey Dude! Depends on your generation I suppose. But that's not the candle I'm lighting to chase off your darkness. Oh, no! I'm talking about our awesome Merch booth.

Do you know what your loved one wants this year? A friggin' Black Horse Motel t-shirt.

Black Horse Motel T-Shirt

DUH! Back that up with an album, throw in a copy of the EP so it's clear to his/her friends that s/he's no poser, but a Horsehead through and through, and you've got a recipe for winter solstice joy. We'll even throw in a sticker. But the trick is you need to be at the show to take advantage of these awesome holiday-only deals:

T-shirt + Red Summer Spirit LP = $20 (25% Off!) Red Summer Spirit LP + Black Horse Motel EP = $10 (BOGO!)

So make some plans to be at the show. Take your loved one to the show, then present them with the t-shirt like you won the stuff for them at a creepy carnival booth, and you'll know the relationship will last exactly as long as it will last.

See you all on Friday,

New Songs, New Shows, New Covers! OH MY!

Hey folks, Greetings from your favorite banjo player. Just wanted to give a heads up to our beautiful fans that the next couple of shows will be unmissable! YUP! I don't want to ruin any surprises, or give up any secrets, but rumor has it that new material may or may not be in the works. Wink wink. So especially to our fans that have been to many of our shows, expect to hear new music soon. In fact, last show we performed a new song called "Run, Rabbit, Run" which you can view here if you haven't yet! Give it a listen!

Aaaaaaaaaaand Galen and I have been holding super secret meetings, in discrete locations, instruments in hands working on new material. We've been calling these meetings "super secret song writing sessions" or "sssws" for short. Don't tell anyone though. Desiree and Meg don't even know about it. The only people you can tell are all of your friends, so they will come out to see us play.

Don't miss our upcoming shows so you can be the first to hear new material (or maybe even a new cover)! If you are reading this post and thinking "Ermahgerd! I don't know when any of Black Horse Motels upcoming shows are!", CALM DOWN, CRAZY! You can always click on the "Shows" tab above, but since you're freaking out, here's a list: 12/20 - Melodies Cafe (formerly Milkboy) - Ardmore, PA 1/10 - World Cafe Live - Philadelphia, PA 3/07 - Boot & Saddle - Philadelphia, PA Details and tickets can be found on our Shows page. We will be adding more shows soon and will keep you posted as we add them!

Looking forward to seeing all your pretty faces soon, and remember to keep all this on the low down... down low?... Yeah down low, that's what people say. Keep it on the down low.

Shows For Spring (and other fun stuff too)

Hey everyone, first of all thanks for all the support with spreading the word about the new album! It seems we've been getting some positive attention recently. Here's the latest: . You can read more under the "press" tab. I just wanted to remind everyone what is on our schedule for spring so far. First of all we have a show on April 14th at the Tin Angel. We are all excited to play as it will be our first time at this venue. And we are thrilled to be playing with such a fine band as Tumbling Bones. Check out their sound! The show starts at 7:00pm, it will be a great way to spend your Sunday evening, and if you sit down and have a meal at Serrano (the Tin Angel's restaurant) first, you get preferred seating. Get your tickets online now, don't risk it at the door. Get em' now!!! (also call this number to make your dinner reservations and get preferred seating 215-928-0770).

Also in April the On The Hill Series is doing an acoustic live recording with us, some of which will be filmed and set free to the interwebs, so expect to see that somewhere around April 21st.

May 3rd, we will playing Milkboy coffee in Ardmore. This is a very important date so everyone mark it down, because May 3rd is also Grandma Richardson's birthday! Rumor has it she will be attending her first Black Horse Motel show to celebrate (this of course means formal attire only (no jeans!!!)).

Well that's all I got for ya folks, keep listening. -David

A long, hot, BHM summer

Here we are, a week into July trying to beat the heat by writing new songs, booking shows and getting ready to record that full length album!

BHM decides on Forge Recording Studio to record their first full length record with Producer/Engineer Ron DeSilvestro. - It was a long and arduous process. We visited more than a handful of studios, each one better than the last. We met several talented owners, engineers and producers that we hope to work with in the future, but in the end, it can only be one for now.

BHM plays their very first festival - elseFest - We opened up elseFest on a hot and buggy day in Wagontown, PA (Yes, this actually exists). There were only a few souls brave enough to come out of their shaded camping areas and sit on the brutally sunny hills, but between the listeners close up and afar, we got a great response. We managed to sweat through our set before a severe storm came through and postponed the main act. Hopefully next year we can go again and play after the sun sets!

Des gets married - To wrap up the very last day of June, our cellist, Des, got married in the picturesque countryside of Upstate, NY. After the DJ wrapped up the dancing portion, a band finished up the night... and what better band? but yes, BHM. Des played her very own wedding reception - an exclusive private show for a bunch of drunken friends and family dressed in 1920's attire!

A happy Independence Day to all!... and holy horseheads, this is one ridiculously hot summer. Here are a few amazing ways to beat the heat with cool drinks, cool friends and cool music:

Thursday, July 12 - BHM with The Jersey Corn Pickers and Emily Arin at Milkboy Philly Saturday, July 14 - BHM with The Grand Nationals and Sons Of Bill at North Star Bar Friday, August 10 - BHM with Christopher Paul Stelling at Milkboy Ardmore

Please stay tuned for more updates. There are so many things going on right now!

elseFest - BHM's first festival

We are very excited to be playing our first summer festival this year! elseFest is a two-day bluegrass, jamgrass and acoustic festival taking place June 22nd & 23rd in beautiful Chester County, PA. Tickets are available in two forms - $45 for a weekend pass and $35 for a day pass. Tents and camping are strongly encouraged and a tent spot is included with the weekend pass. elseFest is also BYOB - no $8 beers or long lines!

We are opening the festival at 2pm on Friday, June 22nd. Gates are at 12pm. Come on out and hear some awesome twangin' stompin' music and hang with us after our set!

kickstarter, radio shows, recording studios and more!

Hello Horseheads! So many things going on. First of all, our Kickstarter is trucking along. We're at 78% - but please keep spreading the word. If we don't raise the full 10k, we don't get any money. And if we don't get any of it, that means no Black Horse Motel album :(

kickstarter donate

Big thanks to this week's Kickstarter donors: Sara Keel, Erica, Landa Medici, Leo, Brian Kressler, Andrew K, Scott Freinberg, Tanya Coon, Debby Haney, and Staci Truitt!

And on that note - we have been trying to find the right studio for us to record said album. We've seen some pretty amazing spaces and met some really great engineers and producers. I guess we'll have to make the difficult decision soon!

We've got two great radio shows coming too! On Sunday, April 22nd, we'll be recording a session for Y-Not Radio that will air on April 25th at 11am and 10pm, and then once again on Saturday the 28th at 8pm. We will also be playing a half hour of our favorite local music, so if you're one of our band friends, you might hear yourself! April 25th 11am and 10pm. Stream Y-Not here On Sunday, April 29th, we will be playing a LIVE set on XPN2's Folkadelphia show. Some lucky Kickstarter donors won tickets to be part of a small in-studio audience for this performance - a first time experience for XPN2!  Winners will be announced very soon! April 29th 3pm. Listen to XPN2 live here

And, if you just can't get enough of us with all the radio shows (especially since we aren't playing a full set), we will be at the North Star Bar on Saturday, April 28th - possibly pulling out a new tune!

post-saddle report

Well, as usual, I am late on my post-show post.  Eh, the ten people who will read this to humor me were probably there anyway.  So, thank you, ten readers, you give me a chore to do after work.  Oh boy, I'm feeling surly! Anyway, the show! It was a great success!  We had an amazing crowd and despite my usual "we need more rehearsals" worries, Dave's first big show at center stage, and the official break-in of new horsehead, Josh, it went swimmingly! (Des is always calm and assures us that all will go as planned and is always right). Thank you forever to everyone who came out and continues to support the band after the line-up change.  Thank you also to the other bands - Rebecca Way, The Cold Roses, and Big Fat Marker - we really enjoyed your sets and your company!  And lastly, thanks to the North Star Bar and soundman Joe!  We always have a great time working with ya'll.

BHM friend Tom Barrett was on hand taking pictures and they will be along shortly.  BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE! We have video of two new songs courtesy of Carolyn Woods.

We've also posted a few new Rehearsal Tapes for your listening pleasure.  We are currently starting to plan for 2012.  It's full of shows, radio station appearances, recording, and surprises!  Stay tuned for these and another VERY EXCITING announcement coming soooon.

back in the saddle...this saturday

Well, friends, show time is quickly approaching.  Our big "Back in the Saddle" show is this Saturday, December 10. We've been working diligently to write new songs and rehearse them for the big reveal. With only two rehearsals left, we are tightening things up, making last minute changes, straightening our bow ties, whittling our drumsticks, pruning our beards, fighting about vocal harmonies, finding good vocal harmonies, playing multiple instruments at once, and working to get 8 brand new songs in order (plus one you already know!). We are very excited to see your faces again and get back on stage at one of our favorite venues, The North Star bar.  Here are the details:

North Star Bar 21+, ID required Doors at 9pm (bar/restaurant open for dinner and drinks) $10 cover 9:30 - The Cold Roses 10:15 - Rebecca Way 11:15 - Big Fat Marker 12:15 - Black Horse Motel

North Star Bar

PLUS!!!!! Saturday's show will also be the official BHM celebration of youngest member (and handsome leading man), David's 21st birthday! Buy this man drinks until he hates us all!

If you're coming to the show, it would be super swell if you could RSVP on the North Star Bar's Facebook event here and/or our Facebook event here.

If you'd like a small peak at what's been going on in the Black Horse Motel camp as we prepare for the show, take a peek at BHM friend Joe DiPuppo's documentary titled "Black Horse Motel - Getting Back in the Saddle". Joe is a film student at Temple U and chose us as the subjects for his final class project. You can watch it here. We sure hope he gets an "A". Thanks, Joe!

See you Saturday!

PS - I've been listening to Harry Potter audiobooks lately and narrated a good amount of this in my head with a wizarding British accent.  Makes things more interesting, it does. I suggest you give it a go then.

summer updates

Wow, how time flies when you're having fun! Here's a brief rundown of what we have been up to since May (in descending order)

  • We've got one more show coming up before we take a small break. It's this Saturday at the Bus Stop Cafe in Pitman, NJ with April Mae and the June Bugs, who we had the pleasure of meeting while we both competed in the Music-a-Live! Philly band competition in May (see below). It's a coffee shop/record store, so we will be doing a more-than-usual acoustic set. Come check it out: The Bus Stop Cafe

    148 South Broadway, Pitman, NJ

    7pm - BYOB, $7

  • We have been playing around the Philly area like crazy lately! Most notably, we had awesome shows at The World Cafe Live, North Star Bar, and The Fire in Philly, as well as the Baby Grand in Wilmington, DE, where dear BHM friend James Suit filled in for me on drums! Thanks again, James!
  • Speaking of last week's North Star show, it was killer. It was a real treat to play with such talented and NICE people as New Sweden, Cait Black, and James Suit. We had so much fun with all the cross-pollination that happened - Andras and I singing with James, James singing with us, New Sweden with us, us with them. It was a big happy noise! We also want to thank the incomparable Johnell Lawrence for joining us once again on violin! Here's a pic that pretty much sums up the night: (more pics here)black horse motel and new sweden Want to hear what this sounded like? Of course you do! Here's a video (courtesy of James Suit)
  • The band bought me an awesome birthday gift: a custom BHM kick drum head. One more step to legitimacy! black horse motel drum head
  • For the entire month of May, we participated in the Music-a-Live! Philly band competition, held at The Legendary Dobb's on South St in Philly. 14 bands started it off, with eliminations each week. Bands would perform and be judged immediately in front of the whole audience, American Idol style! Judge and audience votes would then be tallied, and bands would be placed in ranking order. The next week, the bottom 4 bands would play 1-2 songs for a lifeline. One of those bands would then advance to the next round. Since so much time has passed since then, I'll make a long story short - we were never in the bottom four, and in the end, we got second place. Not too shabby for our first battle of the bands. By the way, the winner was instrumental jazz fusion band LP Stiles. Give them a listen and you will understand why we didn't mind taking second to them. We all agreed that it was one of the best things we could have done for our band. Knowing we were going to be judged forced us to up the ante. Songs were picked apart, transition piece were written, playing was tightened, harmonies were nailed down, and everything was practiced, practiced, and then practiced again. The excitement of positive feedback from the judges and audience and advancing every week fed our energy. By the third and fourth rounds, we tapped into a vein, and started enjoying ourselves. It would have been nice to win first place, but it didn't really matter. We were honored to be a part of it, to meet so many great people, make contacts, etc. More importantly, we improved. We started a ball of energy rolling that has continued into the many shows we have played since. We watched as the crowd warmed to us over the weeks. We've found a groove and a confidence. So, thanks to Music-a-Live! Philly, Dobb's, and EVERYBODY who came during the month to support us and the other bands. We appreciate it more than you know!

Here's a video of "Wheatstraw" from round three. The audio isn't great, but we're having a hell of a time!

Thanks for reading and we promise to update about our EP release and merch soon! - Megan

busy bees

We have been very. busy. It's been an exciting few weeks for the band, so if you haven't been following our Facebook updates, allow me to get you up to date:

  • Early in the month, we played a super fun house party at Dave's. We went for an au natural acoustic setup, so not to folk-rock North Philly too hard. A surprising number of people came out and they were a great audience. We hope they had as much fun as we did. Des' friend, and new BHM friend, Tom Barrett was also on hand to take some photos during and after the set. Check them out if you like!
    andras dave shoot happy bhm-147-edit

  • Mid-April, we began recording a 4-song EP at Kawari Sound Studio with the awesome Matt Muir. We spent two long days/nights in the studio and banged out the majority of vocals and instrumentation. It was a real success for the group, as our first time together in a professional studio with limited time and budget. It was tough at times, but everybody brought their A-game, dug deep, and created something that we are very proud of. We are really excited for everyone to hear the finished product.  Check out some behind the scenes pictures!
    bhm-103-edit bhm-008-edit bhm-026-edit bhm-037-edit

  • Last Friday, we played a show in Newark, Delaware at Home Grown Cafe with our friends New Sweden. It was a blast and we are hoping to work with them again soon. Please check them out if you haven't already. They put on a great show and have certainly made fans out of us.

  • This week, we returned to Kawari Sound Studio to put some finishing touches on our EP. In the next few weeks, we will be editing, mixing, and mastering. Stay tuned for info about the release! Excitement!

  • Last, but not least, next Tuesday, May 3, we are competing in the Music-a-Live! Philly battle of the bands, hosted by The Legendary Dobb's on South St in Philadelphia. We were chosen, along with 13 other bands, to compete for prizes and help benefit music programs in Philly. The contest takes place the first four Tuesdays in May - 3rd, 10th, 17th, and 24th. Bands are judged by a panel of professionals and audience participation. That means we need YOU! Please come out this Tuesday, May 3 and support us!
Check out the Music-a-Live! Philly Facebook page here.
RSVP to the first contest event here.

We hope to see you soon (Tuesday, May 3!)

1/12 North Star Bar post-show

We had a great time at our show at the North Star Bar this past Wednesday night.  It was freezing and snowy, so a big thanks to everyone who braved it and came out! As a first show with our new four-piece lineup, we premiered several new songs, notably "Rabbit Ears" and "Follow Me Down", as well as an updated version of "Grandstands".  We got some really positive feedback on these (and the oldies), but learned a lot from the experience as well.  Losing a band member, switching instruments, and using alternative tunings makes for a lot to master for a first show.  We are figuring it out though, through trial and error. From now on, it's onward and upward as the new Black Horse Motel!

P.S. - I was also really impressed with Lion Versus and encourage anybody who likes folky, down-home, Americana music to check them out.
